Power BI

Work Sample 1 - My Spotify

Context

  • I used R to import my Spotify playlist's Descriptive Audio Stats via the Spotify API
  • I then downloaded a large dataset from Kaggle comprised of Descriptive Audio Stats from some ~600,000 songs and filtered those to only include release dates from 1990-2021 (those years are where a vast amount of my music is from).
  • DR refers to my Playlists and C refers to Comparison (Kaggle Large Dataset)
  • This work sample is less about visualization and more about using API's to retrieve information, interacting with R and Data Wrangling.

* All Samples are Interactive.
* If accessing via mobile then need to turn the device

Work Sample 2 - Spotify

Context

  • This visualization looks at the average popularity of an artist in the decade of their album release.
  • Sometimes there are remastered albums (i.e. try searching for the Beatles - they will show up in 1990's).

  • For this visualization, you will likely need to enlarge it by using the sideways arrow in the bottom right hand corner.

Power BI - Part 2

Power Query: Data Validation

Cleaning, organizing and connecting data is a meticulous art.

If you do not take the time to ensure the integrity of your data then the subsequent results are useless.

Text Analysis in Power BI

I ran a Sentiment Analysis (text analysis that measures the sentiment on a zero to one scale where one is the most positive) on reviews that were web scrapped from Glassdoor

But I was not impressed with the results. That being said, the process was seamless and I'm sure as I get into it there will be more advanced ways to refine the algorithm (custom dictionaries).

The main point here just that you have to know how to tune, interpret and be critical of data before accepting it.

What will be beneficial in the future is the 'extract key phrases' (i.e. 401k , bad boss, great working conditions).

Microsoft certified exam: Pass

Power BI Certification

I passed the DA-100 on 4-14-21.

The certificate title is called 'Data Analyst Associate'.

The relevant aspect of this was that this was an official Microsoft certification exam on the many different facets of Power BI.

Connecting with Azure and SMSS

I was able to easily connect with Azure and Power BI desktop.

I had no issues continually pushing live data and content across the platforms.

I would prefer to conduct most types of deep machine learning in the Azure platform,  or SPSS.

Power BI - SQL Direct Query

Power BI Service

I've found this to be an extremely powerful tool with a myriad of ways to customize dashboards, reports, sharing and security.

Currently, the work samples above are published to the web because they contain no sensitive data and require public access.

However, I am well versed in the tenant settings in Power BI service, row security in Power BI desktop and I am functional in the Microsoft 365 admin portal.

The aforementioned settings provide dozens of ways to share and protect data at a granular level.
